Columbus County Jail Roster

The Columbus County jail roster is a public resource that lists individuals currently held at the Columbus County Detention Center in North Carolina. A jail roster search allows anyone to look up who is in custody, what charges have been filed, and when a person was booked. ColumbusCourt.us can help you find publicly available information about current and recent inmates. You can also check the Columbus County Sheriff's Office website, call the detention center directly, or visit in person. The roster is maintained by the Columbus County Sheriff's Office, which operates the jail and updates custody records as bookings and releases occur.

Search Current Inmates in Columbus Jail

There are several ways to search for someone currently held at the Columbus County Detention Center.

Online Search

  1. Visit ColumbusCourt.us to search publicly available court and inmate information for Columbus County.
  2. You can also go to the Columbus County Sheriff's Office website to check for a current inmate roster or detention center information.
  3. If the roster is displayed as a browsable list rather than a search field, use your browser's built-in find function (Ctrl+F on Windows, Cmd+F on Mac) to locate a name quickly.

To search, you will generally need:

  • The inmate's full legal name (first and last)
  • A booking number, if you have one

Juvenile offenders are not included on the public roster.

By Phone

Call the Columbus County Detention Center to ask whether a specific person is currently in custody. Staff can typically confirm if someone is booked and provide basic booking details over the phone.

In Person

You can visit the detention center lobby during business hours to inquire about a current inmate.

For court-related records, you may also contact the Columbus County Clerk of Court's office at the courthouse in Whiteville.

Find Columbus Jail Booking Records Online

A booking record is created each time a person is processed into the Columbus County Detention Center. During booking, jail staff record identifying information and the circumstances of the arrest. A typical booking record includes:

  • Full legal name and date of birth
  • Booking number
  • Date and time of booking
  • Charges filed
  • Arresting agency (Columbus County Sheriff's Office, Whiteville Police Department, NC Highway Patrol, etc.)
  • Bond amount, if applicable

Current booking records are generally accessible through the jail roster on the Sheriff's Office website or through ColumbusCourt.us. If you need a booking record for someone who has already been released, you may need to submit a records request directly to the Sheriff's Office. For court case records tied to a booking, the North Carolina Judicial Branch explains how to obtain court documents by visiting or contacting the Clerk of Court in the county where the case was filed.

Note that the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction offender search covers state prisoners, probationers, and parolees but does not include county jail inmates. For someone held locally in Columbus County, the jail roster or a direct inquiry to the detention center is the correct resource.

Search the Columbus Jail Roster by Last Name or Booking Number

Most users search the Columbus County jail roster using one of two methods:

Search by Last Name

  1. Enter the inmate's last name into the search field, if one is available on the roster page.
  2. Optionally add a first name to narrow results — especially useful for common surnames.
  3. If the roster displays as a full list without a search field, use your browser's find function to locate the last name.

Tips:

  • Use the person's full legal name, not a nickname or alias.
  • Double-check spelling. A single incorrect letter can cause the search to return no results.
  • If a partial name search is supported, try entering just the first few letters of the last name.

Search by Booking Number

If you already have a booking number — from a bail bondsman, attorney, or prior search — enter it directly. This is the fastest way to pull up a specific record and avoids confusion when multiple people share the same name.

No Results?

If your search returns nothing, consider these possibilities:

  • The person may not yet appear on the roster if booking is still being processed.
  • The person may have already been released or transferred.
  • The name may be spelled differently in official records (check for hyphenated names, suffixes like Jr. or III, or alternate spellings).
  • Call the detention center at (910) 642-6551 to confirm custody status directly.

Jail Roster Updates and Search Limitations in Columbus

The Columbus County jail roster is updated periodically as new bookings and releases are processed, but it does not refresh in real time. There can be a delay — sometimes several hours — between when a person is physically booked into the facility and when their name appears on the public roster.

Key Limitations

  • Processing delays: After an arrest, intake procedures (fingerprinting, photographing, medical screening) must be completed before the booking record is entered into the system. During busy periods or overnight, this can take longer.
  • Release lag: An inmate who has posted bond or been released may still appear on the roster briefly until the system is updated.
  • Current custody only: The public roster typically reflects who is in custody right now. It is not a searchable archive of everyone ever booked into the facility. Older records may need to be requested through the Sheriff's Office or through a public records request to the appropriate agency.
  • Restricted records: Juvenile records, sealed cases, and certain sensitive law enforcement records will not appear on the roster regardless of search method.

If you need historical booking data or records beyond what the roster shows, contact the Columbus County Sheriff's Office directly. For court case history, criminal background checks, and related judicial records in North Carolina, the NC Courts records page outlines available options including in-person access at the Clerk of Court's office. The NC Sex Offender Registry is also available as a separate public lookup tool maintained by the State Bureau of Investigation.
